Phonetic alphabets and charts:

To type phonetic symbols on your computer, you need 2 things:

1. A font with phonetic symbols

• Lucida Sans Unicode: download (316 Ko)
• Arial Sans Unicode : download (22Mo!!)
• Doulos SIL: download (1.27Mo) recommended
• SIL Encore IPA Font
  ("I-have-to-reinstall-again-and-again" troubleshoot with SILIPA93.exe)

2. A way to type/encode characters like a visible virtual keyboard or SAMPA-IPA installed keyboard (see SAMIPA below), Alt-method,...

• with SAMIPA virtual keyboards (you type SAMPA symbols, you see IPA) a 2-page manual and an augmented IPA-chart are included:

• samipafr.zip French French keyboard FR (fev2011)
• samipabe.zip Belgian French keyboard BE (fev2011)
• samipauk.zip United Kingdom keyboard UK (fev2011)
(unfortunately for Windows users only)
• with Windows' Charmap : menu Start menu > All programs > Accessories > System tools > Character Map (preview)
• within Word : Insert menu > Special characters (preview)
• with ALT key : keep ALT key down and type the character decimal code for Windows users.
Mac users: with Alt-key + 4-digit hexadecimal code for (i.e. insert a 0 before the 3-digit code on the IPA green chart). This is called Unicode Hex Input. The "Keyboard Viewer" (Visualiseur de clavier) may also help...
